Net worth by age
The median US family with a head under 35 had a net worth of $33,000 in 2025, according to the Federal Reserve. The median rises with age to $504,900 for families headed by someone 75 or older. Averages are four to five times higher at every age, because a small number of very wealthy families pull them up, so the median is the number to compare yourself with.

Figures are per family, not per person, and grouped by the age of the survey's reference person, usually the head of the family. The Fed restates the 2022 figures in 2025 dollars, which is why they are higher than the 2022 numbers quoted in older articles.
What changed since 2022
Younger families went backwards. The median for families under 35 fell from $42,700 to $33,000, a drop of about 23% after inflation, and the average fell by a third. The Fed says the decline is mainly due to business equity gains made between 2019 and 2022 unwinding.
The oldest families pulled ahead. The median for families headed by someone 75 or older rose from $367,300 to $504,900, about 37%. It is now the highest of any age group, overtaking 65 to 74.
Across all families the median barely moved, from $211,100 to $215,900.
Why the average is so much higher than the median
The median is the family in the middle: half have more, half have less. The average adds everyone up and divides, so a few families with tens of millions drag it far above what a typical family has. For families under 35 the average is about four times the median.
| Net worth group (all ages) | Median net worth in the group |
|---|---|
| Bottom 25% | $1,700 |
| 25th to 50th percentile | $100,900 |
| 50th to 75th percentile | $405,700 |
| 75th to 90th percentile | $1,267,500 |
| Top 10% | $4,935,200 |

Net worth by age in the UK
The Office for National Statistics measures household wealth in Great Britain every two years. In April 2020 to March 2022, median household wealth was £293,700. It rose with age from £15,200 for households headed by someone aged 16 to 24 to a peak of £502,500 at 65 to 74, then fell as pensions were drawn down.
Two things make UK and US figures hard to compare. The ONS counts private pension wealth, including the value of defined benefit pensions, which is often the largest single item for older households; without pensions the median was £181,700. And the UK figures are older, covering 2020 to 2022. Source: ONS, Household total wealth in Great Britain, released 24 January 2025. For tracking UK accounts, see net worth tracking in the UK.
If your money is in more than one country
Almost every net worth by age chart online is American. US benchmarks assume US housing costs, US retirement accounts and dollars, so they say little about a household in Berlin, Bangalore or Bristol. There is no equivalent by-age table for India.
If your savings are spread across countries, convert everything into one currency before comparing, and compare like with like: the US figures include home equity and retirement accounts. NetWorthTrackr does the conversion nightly across 31 currencies. More in tracking net worth across currencies.
Work out your own number
Benchmarks are a rough guide. The comparison that tells you most is with yourself a year ago. Add up what you own, subtract what you owe, and write the date next to it. The free net worth calculator does it in your browser with no signup, and NetWorthTrackr keeps the history for you.
Common questions
In the US in 2025, average family net worth was $135,400 under 35, $681,900 at 35 to 44, $1,244,500 at 45 to 54, $1,878,000 at 55 to 64, $1,897,600 at 65 to 74 and $1,962,200 at 75 or older (Federal Reserve, Survey of Consumer Finances). The median is a better comparison, because averages are pulled up by a few very wealthy families.

The median US family with a head aged 35 to 44 had $155,600 in 2025. The average was $681,900, but that is skewed by a small number of very wealthy families.
The median US family with a head aged 45 to 54 had $253,700 in 2025, and $411,900 at 55 to 64.
The average adds up every family and divides, so a few families worth tens of millions pull it up. The median is the family in the middle. In 2025 the US average was about four to five times the median at every age.

In the Federal Reserve figures, yes: home equity and retirement accounts are included. The UK figures include private pension wealth too. Compare like with like when you add up your own.
